Rainwater Collection System

Enjoy pure filtered rain water here. The property does not have well water which is now discouraged by the county. Plus well water has a variety of compounds which give it an aroma and hardens the water. Learn more below.

Rainwater Collection

The rainwater is collected from the roofs of the house (2348 sq ft) and the garage (769 sq ft). 1 inch of rain provides 1943 gallons of water. It takes about 15 inches of rain to fill an empty tank. The usual yearly rainfall here is about 30 inches. But recently, some years have been as low as 24 inches.

Filtration

The rainwater goes through multiple stages of filtration. The leaf guards and the screens on the top of the tank filter most plant debris. The pipes themselves filter most of the dust and dirt by trapping it in the ground level pipes, which are flushed yearly. After going through the pump, the water is filtered by a Viqua VH410-F22 purification system which filters out >5 micrometer size particles, and has a carbon filter and a UV filter for odor and killing all contagions. The water is ready to drink. We also have an RO filter at the kitchen sink.

Conservation

We ask that you use only as much water as needed. This is a semi-arid environment and rainwater is the only supply that we have. Normal consumption, cleaning and bathing should be no problem, but please do not take extremely long showers for example. In any case, please enjoy how clean you feel after you bathe!!
